I am ready to level up my life!

Did you notice this badge to the side? :) If you click on it, it will link you to my Pledge page where I swear I'm ready to level up my life!

Okay, you might be wondering what this is about. Well, you see, dear reader, I am a geek, and I am proud of it too! I am the type of person who is equally at home with a great tabletop game or with a few friends painting the town red. I can geek it up and glam it up too!

Girly geek
Truth: I want this controller

I'm a definite girly geek.

And as a girly geek, I like the idea of leveling up through experience (points) because it's like a huge reminder that I'm getting somewhere in this life. Currently I feel like I'm at level one. Maybe in truth I'm a level 5 or maybe even a level 10. Maybe. But for simplicity's sake, I'm going to pretend I'm a level one character with maybe a robe and some boots. Oh, and a wooden sword for a weapon. (Gamers, you know how the start of games go. Ya feel me.)

I'll fight monsters/challenges. I'll go through events. I'll upgrade my party members (Read: I will add new valuable friends to my life and help the friends I have to be better people). Slowly I will rack up the experience points to reach the next level. Then the next and the next... and the next, and so on!

Sometimes challenges aren't about killing rats
I don't have to be envious of other people if I think of life this way! If someone has a 'better' life than me, I just have to tell myself they're a higher level. One day I'll get to that point too. If I don't, I probably filled up on different stats. No big. (I don't really get jealous of other players in games because duh! We had different starting points. So why the jealousy in real life?! Who knows. This is the subject of another post...)

The Life Game

Life is about leveling up, one way or another!

In school, we progress from level to level, from year to year until we graduate. In a job, the levels may be salaries or title promotions. In your day-to-day life, it might be the happiness you feel with your relationships, your level of skill or maybe your fitness. We all seek to improve ourselves.

Or we don't, and we stagnate.

Well, this year and every year from now, I want to move forward. Even if it's only half a level, it beats sitting in the sewers of the first dungeon. Because as we all know from games, the coolest challenges and the best of weaponry can only be obtained after we've beaten boss after boss and progressed the story.

A lot of us are so keen on finishing video games, gaining online achievements, being the best on your server or whatever, but we ignore our own lives, our own realities and or own stories.

I'm not so keen on ignoring my own story anymore.

As William Shakespeare said...

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,

What's your story going to be?

I hope that inspired you in some way! :) Let me know what you think. This post and the idea of leveling up was inspired by Steve Kamb's post on NerdFitness.

And remember...

If you're having a difficult time, it's because...

If you're keen to pledge to level up your life, grab a badge and leave a comment! And if you want to know about my progress, check out that little button on the right. :)

How are your goals for the year going? I really want to know!

Let your story unravel,

HOW TO: Categorise your posts on Blogger

Hi, lovely readers! I recently guest-posted on Bloggers Bunch on how to categorise your posts on Blogger using labels

Have you ever gone onto a blog that talks about different topics when you were only interested in a couple of them? Don’t you love it when the blogger makes your life easier by putting up links on their header (or sidebar!) for their different topics?! That way you don’t have to wade through all their posts to find the ones you love!

Have you ever wondered how they do it?

I will show you how to take your blog header from this:

To this...!

Here's the link to the tutorial!

If you're interested in becoming a part of a community of bloggers, check out more of Bloggers Bunch. They feature bloggers, hold monthly bloggers contests and look for guest posts from fabulous people!

Happy birthday, Daddy!

In case you're reading my blog, happy birthday!!! I love youuu! Even though I flake out on visiting, and I hate answering calls. :)

My lovely readers, if you could greet my dad a happy birthday, I would be tickled pink! :D (I don't even know if he still reads this blog BUT STILL. Last thing he mentioned liking was the Thanksgiving post, haha!)

You are sunshine,

P.S. I don't think my header is that bad. I'm just poking fun at myself! :) (Just a disclaimer before someone tries to reassure me, haha!)

Gyaru Questions!

Hi there! Today's going to be a short post. I spotted a gyaru questionairre on the Forever Gyaru forums, and I couldn't resist filling it out! (If you don't know what gyaru is, check out this post.)

I will probably post my answers here on the forum as well since, well, that was the original intention of the question-asker... But this will depend entirely on how motivated/mindful I'll be since I have a tendency to be lazy and the forgetfulness of a... I forget. So you see my point really!

Gyaru Questions

What's your name? Do you have a nickname?
Patricia! Call me Pattee. :)
How old are you?
Twenteen. Oh, alright... 20.
Where are you from?
Philippines. :) But I live in New Zealand!
What is your occupation?
Student
Do you have a blog/facebook/twitter?
http://wannabeempress.blogspot.com, @wannabeempress
How did you discover Gyaru?
It may have been Tumblr!
What is your favorite substyle?
Kuro gal (dark-skinned gal) and also onee (sophisticated older sister), ane (rebellious older sister) and himekaji (casual princess)!
When did your interest for Gyaru started?
Late April-mid May of 2012 :)
Do you follow some other fashion style besides Gyaru?
The I-wear-what-I-want style!
Do you have any Japanese gal inspiration? If yes, who?
There are so manyyyy! I'll make a separate post about this some other time...?
Do you have any gaijin gal inspiration? If yes, who?
Saiharii. Black gyaru in general. Ninoshka. Rox. (I should add links here, huh?)
What are your favorite brands?
The Pretty Reckless and... I don't know anymore.
Do you wear Gyaru everyday?
I wish!
What's the reaction of your family and friends about Gyaru?
'Why do you wear so much makeup?' 'You're pretty without all this makeup!' 'Why do you need to be different?' 'You look scary with that thing on your eye!' 'Pretty!' 'You look nice today' 'You look Japanese' 'I thought you were a white girl which is weird because I don't have white friends' 'Your lashes look good, not fake like Nicki Minaj' ---- I am learning to ignore their feedback slowly...
When you go on the street dressed as a gyaru, how do people deal with your look?
Um, I think people look at me sometimes? It's really not that bad here in New Zealand.
For you, is it difficult to be a gyaru?
Kind of. It's a bit expensive even if I don't buy brand clothes or anything. And I'm also a very lazy person, so the motivation needed to do my hair and/or my makeup is tremendous!
In your country, are there many people who also wear Gyaru?
There are around 5 of us from what I know!
Have you turned some friend into a Gyaru lover?
I wish. I sincerely honestly wish. Then I would have a gyaru buddy!
What makeup do you prefer: lighter and natural or darker and extravagant?
Gonna say lighter makeup! But people I know would say my makeup is not light or natural at all. BUT IT'S LIGHT FOR GYARU, OKAY.
Do you wear makeup everyday? If yes, what kind of makeup do you usually use?
Used to! Usually BB creme, eyeliner, eye shadow, eyebrow powder, concealer, mascara, false lashes, lip gloss, and I think that's it. On a lazy day, just eyebrow powder. On a 2013 day, no makeup. I have become what I hate!
What are your favorite hairstyles and which ones do you use more often?
Fave hairstyles are curls. I love curls. I wear my hair in a bun often because it's summer. In the winter, I usually wore wigs.
What is your skincare routine?
HAHAHAHAHA. None.
What is your haircare routine?
Shampoo! Maybe conditioner. When I freak out that my hair seems drier than usual, I use Lush hair serum/cream... thing. I will check the name later!
Do you have some knowledge in Japanese language?
My knowledge is limited to what I know from watching anime 5 years ago. Translation: not a lot.
What kind of music do you listen to?
Anything I feel like. Lately lots and lots of pop and dance because I just feel so bouncy all the time! Plus it blocks out the voice in my head that tells me I'm a failure and should kill myself.
What are your tips for someone who is starting in Gyaru?
Go on Tumblr. Look at the gyaru tag. Google gyaru every day and night for at least a week. Do your research. Read tutorials. Try them out. Wear falsies. Try contacts (if you can!). Check the archives of Gyaru Secrets for wisdom (not the new stuff except for the ninja cookie secrets!). Just do it. Make mistakes. Learn.

That was interesting!

That was a productive (not really) way to tell you about myself and stay awake in the whee hours of the morning!

What do you think of my answers? Have I finally converted you to gyaru? Wonder why there were no pictures? Gee, Pattee, you're so lazy today!

I love you all anyway,

Put on that wig and enjoy yourself!

Last month my mum invited me last minute to a costume party. The original plan was for me to visit my parents’ place and do her makeup, then take a bus home and chillax to the max. But somehow I got roped into attending a costume party and wearing a white wig!

That day was a humbling experience in life lessons in spite of it being just another day and just another party.

Huh? How?

What I learned from donning that white wig

I am not always the star of the show

Me, my mum, Justin - Note how I am not in the centre!
I have a natural tendency to want all eyes on me, but sometimes I have to remember that naturally it isn’t all about me. Sometimes someone else is going to take centre stage. For that day, my Mommy was going to be numero uno. See how pretty she is?!

My makeup skills + her natural beauty = she won an award for the night! :D
If you’re the type who enjoys being the main attraction when out with friends, at parties, at work or insert applicable-situation-here, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you don’t have to hog the limelight all the time.

There’s a certain joy in being invisible every once in a while, to observe from the outside as I often used to do when I was younger. To watch from the fringe, you get to observe others and share in their experiences in a detached peaceful way. I guess a simple form of that is when I go on Facebook and see pictures and status updates from people I know. I’m lurking and watching like a creeper who takes pleasure in your happiness (and sometimes your misery too, I’m sorry… maybe.)

(I would like to note here that although I enjoy being the main attraction, I am usually not. I just would prefer to be, so maybe that’s why I like heaps of makeup and funky clothes?!)

Be thankful for your easy-going boyfriend/friends/family

Substitute person to be thankful for as you will!

Is there someone in your life who’s almost always willing to go with the flow? Someone laid-back and easy to get along with? Go thank that person right now. Send that wonderful specimen of a human being (or animal if your faithful companion isn’t humanoid) a thank you note or email, a text, a call, a… something to show your gratitude.

Life can be hectic and stressful! It’s true, and for others even more so. It’s awesome to have someone willing to just go along with your random plans, who’ll listen to your crazy and possibly inane ideas and someone who’ll be there for you when others won’t.

Sometimes the favours you ask will be simple ones like look silly in a 70’s-style blond wig or ‘Knock on that door and say DID YOU DIAL 0800-SEXY?’, and sometimes you’ll really need their help. It’s nice to have someone, and it’s even nicer to let them know you’re thankful for them.

Dear Justin, thank you! And to sort of quote the dolphins in The Hitchhikers’ Guide to The Galaxy: ‘thanks for all the fish!’ (Read: tuna!!!!!!! With mayonnaise!!!!) I love you even though you shoved ice cream in my mouth!

DollyWink eyelashes are better than $2 ones

If you like false lashes, then you should get DollyWink ones. They are soft, flexible and look fantastic! I’m wearing Sweet 02, I think. They are much better than the cheap ones I normally get!

(I admit this 'lesson' was sort of an excuse to show off my makeup. Sorry, not sorry!)

Trust your gut

You know how people keep saying trust your gut with big decisions? It works for small decisions too. It was annoying to be reminded of this through a game because I absolutely hate losing, but there you go.

We won though. But still. We would have won more had I gone with my instinct.

I knew it was Powerpuff Girls!! Why didn’t I just say so?!! We didn’t get the 300 points??!!!!

That was my internal monologue during the game. I’m still annoyed my boyfriend hit the buzzer a split second before I did.

Remember, kids, go with your gut, or you’ll land smack on your butt.

Go with the flow

I so did not want to go at first! For one thing, other than my family, I wouldn’t know anyone at that party. Their new church friends aren’t really people I know. Plus I hadn’t showered yet; I was feeling kind of gross. Also! Also! I’m just not a party person, I guess?! Every time I’m invited to one, I invariably don’t show up (with some exceptions). Whoops.

But I guess sometimes it’s cool to go with the flow. Just say yes to life, or your parents’ invitation to a Christmas party. I mean free food, right?! And as to not having showered, girl, just slap some deodorant on, you don’t stank that baddd. And even though I had to rush my makeup in the car (Yes, lashes and all!), it was fun! I had fun. I ate yummy food, listened to a live band (Mum's friends were pretty good!), and it was a pleasant reminder that even if you look weird in a wig, if you just let loose and relax, it doesn't matter.

Challenge: say yes to one thing you normally would IMMEDIATELY DECLINE this week.

On Sunday I climbed up a hill and up a tree. Oh, and I climbed some rocks too with my Tita’s daughter. We spotted a suspicious red blanket that ---- WAIT. That’s a story for another time!

Bonus:

Look at my cutie pie little sister with white hair! Aw, precious.

Can you relate to these simple lessons? Isn’t it terrific the world reminds us to be humble and kind in simple ways? Would you wear a white wig and go to a party, knowing you haven’t showered yet?!

Yours is control,

P.S. I’m trying out ending my posts with affirmations that suit empresses and wonderful readers like you. Whatcha think?! (Empress + wonderful reader = you, by the way)

P.P.S. Hi Valerie! You said you wanted an outfit post? Well, this one has a gratuitous photo of myself and my makeup too. Hope you like it! :D I know it's not really an outfit post though!

Running, Photoshop CS2 for Free and random updates!

Hi there!

I just recently downloaded Adobe Photoshop's CS2 for free, and I'm having a blast with it! (More details from Lifehacker here.)

Screencap from my phone!

I also recently purchased Six to Start's Zombies, Run! 5k Training app for my Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and as with their other running app, I love it! It's a slow start making me walk for 10 minutes before the actual training begins, but that makes it great for beginners. Download it if you have an iOS or Android device. :D (If you want just the running app, not the training one, check out their Zombies Run! product for Windows Phone, iOS and Android!)

Oh, and I signed up for Tribesports because I like challenges, and the community seems very nice. I'm currently doing the No Soda for 4 Weeks challenge, among other things. :) Sign up, and let's follow each other! It's always more fun to join a new website with friends.

As you can see, I'm trying to work on my main goal of running 5k without stopping (or walking) slowly but surely. I missed my workout yesterday because for some reason I was soooo drained, but I'll do it today - I promise! (I can't break promises to you guys, right?! That'd be bad.)

Okay, if you were wondering what Photoshop and running have to do with each other, it's this. The FIRST thing I did with my new CS2 is to skinnify myself. Oh, yeah, I went there. No shame. I figure I won't end up that skinny even if I work hard, but it amused me to no end that maybe I could look like that! Although hopefully not as messed up because my Photoshop skills are so weak.

Yeah, okay. The pictures are here. Feel free to gawk. And laugh. Or something. I actually think I look nice! I didn't do anything to my face. I was blessed with a skinny face. When I'm not this fat, it actually looks kind of gaunt. Think cheekbones a la Disney villains?! I don't know. It was like that when I was 14.

I'll stop stalling now.

Now.

Okay.

HAHAHAHA.

I know the background looks weird, and I make myself look strange with the proportions, but cut me some slack! I just discovered Liquify today.

If you also want to try playing around with a skinnier/plus-er version of you, check out this tutorial which I probably should have looked at BEFORE I played around. (I used a tutorial of lesser quality, to my utter chagrin)

Okay, I'm done now. I'm still laughing. It is too funny for me.

What do you think of FREE photoshop? What about zombies, running and combination of the two? Do you want to sign up for Tribesports (Please do!)? And, lastly, what do you think of a skinnier sexier me?! HAHAHAHAHA.

Leave a comment, tweet me, share this post on Facebook, send me an ask on Ask.FM, whatever - I love the feedback!

Love you alllll,

The Liebster Award

The Magical Liebster Award

Hey there, bodacious babes!

I was nominated for a Liebster award by Amy from Dreaming, Wishing Doing last year. Thanks, Amy! I meant to post this sooner, but I got distracted by holiday festivities.

The Liebster award is a badge of coolness of sorts given to and up-and-coming bloggers by other superstars-to-be. It's a fun way to get to know other bloggers and build up an unstoppable blogging community.

Okay, here we go!

From what I understand, the award post goes like this: 11 random facts, answers to the questions posed by the award giver and then nominating cool awesome bloggers!

11 Random Facts About Me

1) I've had four teeth extracted in one sitting when I had my braces. I felt so special and pain-resistant afterwards because my one exclamation of pain was a feeble 'ow'.

2) I used to be terrified of butterflies. One time a friend brought a realistic snake toy to school and scared all my classmates. I sat there calmly. Then she put some fake butterflies in my hair -- All hell broke loose. I started screaming and crying, generally just freaking out. DO YOU REMEMBER THIS, CLASSMATES FROM SPCP 1-9?

3) My butterfly phobia (then) probably stemmed from that Spongebob Squarepants episode where they featured Sandy's pet caterpillar that became a butterfly under Spongebob and Patrick's care. That closeup shot of a butterfly freaks me out to this day.

4) I am in love with table top games (board, fighting figurine things..., card, etc). My boyfriend and I spent a lot of money on Warhammer, Game of Thrones, assorted board games, what have you.
5) To my utter shame, I've never cosplayed. I've spent many years looking at the community and just wanting to do it, and yet... not doing it. I promise I'll do it soon! Just need to figure out which stuff to buy from Taobao. :)

6) I don't know how to put on fake lower lashes. This is a desperate cry for help, mind you. I need to learn how to do this.

I stole this photo, proving that I am unoriginal and probably won't be writing that novel.

7) When I'm feeling down and want to feel better about myself, I think about what my homeroom teacher in sophomore year wrote to me: "In 10 years, I look forward to reading your novel :)" Even now 5 years later, it still touches my heart that she believed in me. :) Thank you, Ms Palileo! You remain one of my favourite teachers ever

8) I once cried because of that awesome teacher. She accidentally marked my English exam as 76/100 instead of 86/100. I panicked and broke down. Sorry, not sorry. My dad would've freaked, okay? English = muchos importante at home.

The bed I wish I had... :)

9) I spent the last few months lying in bed all day, knowing my awesome boyfriend would get everything for me. It was awful for me! I mean, I enjoyed it, but it was so bad for my health. I would literally only get up for showers and private time in the washroom. And occasionally leaving the confines of the comfy room. Occasionally. But now I leave the apartment every day! I go to work, hang out at Esquires, visit my friends, explore the city, go shopping and do other stuff. Lemme tell you. This is so much better.

10) I have three purple balloons hanging from the ceiling. They've been there since September. It's January. Why are they still fully inflated?! My theory is they are sucking the air (read: life) out of the sole pink balloon nesting with them and using it to remain youthful and round.

11) For years my mantra was "Oh ew marriage is the grossest thing. That's like shackling your soul to the hellgate, and allowing it to swallow you whole every day." But now that I have Justin I know I want to spend the rest of my life with him. :) Cheesy, right?!

11 Random Questions from Amy

1. Cat person or dog person?
My answer is DOG. But I am open to cat buddies.
2. If it was your last day on earth, what would you do?

Probably cuddle with my boyfriend and eat all the sweets I can!
3. If you won $1 million, what would the first thing you buy be?

Ooh, tricky question. Uhm. Oh, I'd rush to Ippondo, the Japanese cosmetics store and buy lashes and hair dye. And other makeup. Then I'd buy a DSLR and a flat screen TV. Oh. And I'd buy myself a tablet, and --- Right, the question was just for the first thing. Whooooops!
4. What is your idea of a perfect date?

One where I have several photographers documenting the event. Oh, and I'll be slim. Photographers + slim = Yeah, that's perfect enough. Anywhere with Justin makes me happy already. :) I don't need perfection.
5. What is your dream job?

Anything where I am challenged, and I don't have to come into the office to do it. Telecommute, yo!
6. If you had three wishes, what would they be?

World peace, an unlimited gold vault (because gold is gooooold) and for whomever is offering me the wishes to forget they already asked and ask me again! (Three more wishes!)
7. What do you wish that other bloggers knew about you?

I want to build up a graphic design portfolio, so if they emailed or tweeted, I'd be glad to help them work on media kits, headers, buttons, etc. :3
8. If we went out for dinner what would you order?

Butter chicken and french fries (chips to Kiwis and Aussie folk!)
9. What are your three favourite posts you have written?

Going Gyaru shopping post, My goals/quests for 2013 and Happy Thanksgiving!
10. Do you have any rules for buying clothes? If so, what are they?

If at all possible, buy on sale. Always on sale. Look for that discount!
11. If you could pack up and go anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would it be and why?
If I'm not paying for it then the Manila, Philippines because I miss my friends there. If I have to pay, then I'm going to Bali because my parents tell me it's cheap and I looooove beaches!

My goals/quests for 2013! [Free Printable]

Hello again! To score a free printable to scribble and doodle your goals for the year, scroll towards the end of the post! :)

Aaaaand here are my goals for the year!

2013 goals by Pattee the Wannabe Empress

Quests? Missions?

If you're wondering why I've labelled my goals as quests and missions, it's because I'm a geek. I enjoy video games. I like gamification. And I'm in the process of copying Steve Kamb's idea of making life into an epic quest!

My blog's name is Wannabe Empress. It implies I want to be someone great because if you're an empress, you probably had to kick some major butt to get where you are and become who you are. So I'm in the process of becoming an empress in my own eyes! Little by little, I'm improving myself. :) And to make it more fun I'll see my milestones as quests! (You know, because it's more epic to say you completed a quest than to say I hit a milestone, or maybe that's just me.)

At the moment, main quests are worth 10% each, and side quests are worth 5% of a level. BONUS missions can be worth 1-10%. I'll generate a random number between 1 and 10, and whatever comes up will be the number of experience points. The element of randomness will make me work harder, I can feel it. Yup. That's my plan. This is already really exciting for me! I'm getting really giddy~ (I'll probably make a new page on my blog just to track these goals and stuff... WHEEE!)

As I level up, I'll amp up the difficulty of my goals and introduce quests worth more points! So what's 10% of a level now may become worth just 5% later on. And when I become more awesome, I'll include EPIC quests that are worth 50% of a level. Yessss.

I'd explain my goals, but this post seems to be getting long enough! Have a free printable now!

Hello there! Happy New Year!

Welcome to the magical world that brings us 2013.

May it bring us rainbows and unicorns and lots of shopping! And let’s take a moment to honour Desmond Miles of Assassin’s Creed for saving us from the apocalypse (Geeky reference here. Sorry, not sorry).

Play Assassin's Creed, okay?

It’s that time of year again when we all sit down and set out to become better versions of ourselves. We go ahead and write down things like ‘I will run more’, ‘I’m going to ask so-and-so out on a date’, etc.

We do this with gusto as we are showered in the sparkly magic that is the New Year.

But then somehow as the first couple of weeks of the New Year fade into the sands of time, the magic begins to wear off. The New Year becomes less and less enchanting and more and more just like the same old life we’ve been living. We start to forget what we set out to do. Instead of conquering the New Year, the habits of the bygone years conquer us anew. We settle into the comforting existence that we swore we’d leave behind and just kind of… stop.

Girllll, am I guilty of this.

Pictured here: Regrets to fill a page (Yeah, it's full of black. Do you get it?!)

The weight I promised to get rid off? Still there. The novel I swore I’d finish by age 20? Uh, I left the first chapter in the Philippines and promptly forgot about it. The promise to ‘become a good cook’? Yeah, what happened to that? What about my oath to do the Auckland Harbour Crossing and swim 2.6km in open waters by November 2012? Hahahahaha, good one, Pattee! You had me going for a bit.

The thing is we resolve to do things, and we mean well, but somehow we end up flat on our faces. There are wonderful people out there who manage to take the bull that is life by the horns and just KICK SOME MAJOR BUTTOCKS. But I am not one of those people… yet. And I want to be.

I honestly don’t think I’m much of a resolutions person. I was never one for persistence and discipline. But results? I can do results! Maybe it won’t come out as amazing as I was expecting, but, hey! Shoot for the moon and land in the stars, right?

Yeah, in theory. I still have to try to actually even get midway to the stars. So what’s my game plan? What can be your game plan?

Well, here’s what I’ve learned over the past few days of reading random articles via Twitter. (Dear Twitter people I follow, never change unless for the better. I love reading your tweets!)

How To Make Your New Year’s Resolutions/Goals/Bucket List Be More Achievable, I Guess

5 Simple Steps?

1. Rope your buddy into this because if you’re going to suffer your way into awesome, by golly, you do not want to be the only one miserable!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx For example, when studying for a tough exam, do you find it easier to study when ushered on by the onslaught of death threats by your closest friends? If not, then you may be lucky your friends don't threaten to kill you, but you might be missing out on some life-changing stuff. What I'm trying to say is don't go at it alone. Humans are social creatures (in spite of also being selfish and possibly bloodthirsty). We got your back, baby.

 2. Make it so freaking simple to do stuff a brain dead raccoon could do it

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx We do things because they're easy to do. Why do I eat cake instead of go out for a run? It's easier to get my boyfriend to buy/fetch/prepare cake than for me to physically get ready for a run, then actually go out and do it. You know that saying, Keep It Simple Stupid? Applies here as well. You know BJ Fogg from Stanford University? Check out his Tiny Habits program and change your life the easy way, one baby step at a time.

3. Make a plan because when you fail to plan, plan to fail

Figure out Step 2, or you get... a pile of underpants! And not much else

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx When I was taking my Management 101 class, I hated it because my lecturer had a never-ending supply of pithy quotables and motivational whatevers. Also because I thought it was a lot of stupid. Actually it was one of the best classes of my life (but only after I was done with it), and she was totally right when you should make a plan. Don't do it the South Park way and think that Step 2 will magically take you from collecting underpants to PROFIT$$$$.

4. Ease into it like when you’re about to take an ice cold shower because the heater is busted, but you really really need to shower RIGHT NOW because you have a hot date in 2 hours, and you are a SOLDIER, you can DO THIS

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Dudes and dudettes, you totally got this. You know what you want! You're going for it! But jumping headlong into a bunch of resolutions is almost always a recipe for disaster.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx It's akin to jumping into an icy shower for the first time in years when you've familiarised yourself so thoroughly with the loving caress of the hot shower from day one. You freak. You get overwhelmed. You may try to take those cold showers again for a little while, but it is highly possible you may never ever try a cold shower again. On the other hand, if you slowly ease your way into the icy waters, you will probably be willing to try it again tomorrow (assuming you shower everyday), the next day and the next. You know how it is with the tortoise and the hare. Slow and steady wins the race and such and such. (I know I'm a hypocrite! I spew quotes left and right too ;__;)

5. Get specific because if you were the pilot of the airplane that is your life, you better watch that navigation system, lest you end up crashing into a mountain rather than flying over the clear skies of beautiful Hawaii

xxxxxxxxxxxxxx What do you want to achieve? That's a good question to ask yourself. For example, do you want to drop 2 dress sizes, or do you want to run a marathon? Similar goals in the sense they're both fitness-related, but the thinking behind them is different, and the plans to achieve them may be drastically different. What do you want? Really want? Because even if you ended up running that marathon when all you really wanted was to fit into that sexy bodycon dress, sure, you'll be proud, but in your heart of hearts, you'll just know that wasn't what you really wanted. So get specific and think! :)

This list is really a way for me to remember stuff I read and for me to remember that if other people can be awesome, why can’t I be?

And more importantly... why shouldn’t you be awesome?

Depicted: You - a special snowflake, no matter what anyone may say
Snowflake by  Bystander>

Granted, psychology taught me we’re not all special snowflakes (I think I should put a reference here sometime), but my high school biology teacher told us that we’re all one-in-a-billion. I’d rather hear that then ‘Well, you’re not really that different’.  Okay, so maybe I’m not a special snowflake. That certainly doesn’t mean I can’t put on a damn good show of being one and inspiring others to do the same.

So here’s to making 2013 the year of being freaking awesome (Oh gosh, I’ve been watching too much Supernatural lately, so I apologise for the exuberant use of the word ‘awesome’).

The other day I read about picking a word for the year and letting it guide me. My word is experience. Really experience life and experience being me completely. And let the empress inside me shine. And if the experiences I end up facing this year won’t be too great? Yeah, okay, I’ll take those and experience them too (Read: I started the year by getting sick, tripping on flat ground, skinning my knee and toe (separate occasions) and posing with practically no eyebrows for family photos).

What’s your word for 2013?! And what do you think of The Five Steps I Borrowed From Other People To Make Life Awesome-r? :)

If you enjoyed, hate, got a laugh or otherwise got some worthwhile reaction out of this post, don't hesitate to leave a comment, share it on Twitter or Facebook or tell people about my blog! :)

Here’s to life-winning,

P.S. Coming soon: my goals for the year!
P.P.S. I use post-scripts a lot gwarrrrr
