Ane Style Guide

Whoa, it’s been a while since I last made an update for this series! Let’s make up for lost time with a look at the gyaru style ‘ane’.

Unfamiliar with this style? Let’s picture it...

You see a lady – oh, you just know she’s a lady – standing with her friends. There’s a ferocity to her gaze and her looks tempered with hints of glamour and maturity. A tattoo adorns her bare shoulders, and her skin is the golden brown of a sun-kissed goddess. She’s beautiful and fierce, and she knows it. Don’t mess with her.

Sexy lady, foxy mama, rebellious star, do these descriptions suit you? Maybe you ought to start incorporating a bit of ane into your life!

Let’s see how to do just that.

Polyvore Coordinate

What do you radical ladies think of this look? It screams 'REBEL' but oozes with class as well. If you want to lessen the hooch factor of the thigh highs, you could wear a skirt with a hem long enough to hide the tops of the boots. That way it looks like you have a gorgeous pair of endless boots/leggings. Right?! (Someone send me thigh highs in a size 9 or 10. Please.)

Key Look

  • Fur (I prefer faux to be perfectly honest!)
  • Leopard print
  • Black is a dominant colour
  • Feminine hair styles like updos and curls
  • Tattoos
  • High heels
  • Leather jackets
  • Leather (or pleather or similar!)
  • Big jewellery
  • Sophisticated makeup similar to onee gyaru
  • Brown, black, grey eyeshadows
  • Fake lashes
  • Skin can be tan or fair
  • Piercings
  • Large over-the-top sunnies
  • Skull motif
  • A splash of rebellion (You can just see it on their faces, right?!)
  • Short shorts
  • Body con clothing
  • Short skirts
  • Thigh high boots (or knee highs)
  • Mesh caps
  • Denim
These are common elements to the ane gal look. But I firmly believe that for the sexy ane gal look, you don't have to stick to what's listed above. Have some fun with the style because that's what fashion is for.

If you want to be ane, the most important thing is to come dressed up in a rockin' attitude.

That doesn't mean, however, your look is limited to a 'rock' look. Haha! It's the ATTITUDE, right?!

Magazines

Check out the sexy sleek Soul Sister! They feature not only ane style but also ora ora and kuronba. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go here.)

Where can you get it?

You can try downloading volumes 3-5 from Sukebans or purchasing it from the Soul Sister store. It's in Japanese, so you could try translating it on Google Chrome. I will try to see if I can figure it out sometime...

NOTE: Hi! A commenter left a message saying that this magazine is more for yankees. I saw quite a bit of ane while flipping through one issue though (I think it was volume 3 or 5!), but if you think the mag is too 'yankee', then what you can do is flip through a magazine more for onee gyaru like Jelly and Happie Nuts. See how an onee gal dresses and add to it a fierce rebellious twist! Things like: brighter red lipstick, more unusual hair colouring, tattoo showing, more skin tight clothing!

Models

Of course you also want to see how some gorgeous ladies wear this style! Check out these models!
Yurika
Yurika is a model for Soul Sister, and she also has a singing career in Japan. If you want to see more of her, check out her blog on Ameblo!

Mipochi is also a model for Soul Sister as well as Egg, and she's an adviser for the gyaru circle Black Diamond. If you want to see more of her, you can look her up on Tumblr or just go to her blog here.

Kazue Nakai
Kazue Nakai is a model for Soul Sister. If you want to check out more of her, see her Ameblo blog here!

Final thoughts

I hope you got something out of this!

What do you think of ane gal? Do you already step out in the sophisticated and edgy style? Maybe you want to start out small with just a couple of elements?

Let me know what you think!

In the comments below or on Twitter!

Until next time...

Stay gyaru!

  3. ane doesn't necessarily equal to rock. you're right about fierce though. and soul sister is more for yankees.

  4. Hey, Anonymous person! :) Not sure where I came across as saying ane is equal to rock (Maybe it was in the overall tone...?), but I'll make a note of that. Thanks! And as for Soul Sister, it was the only mag that I was sure catered to ane (other than ora and stuff). I'll mention what you said in my post!

Thank you for your feedback. :)
